The concept of a safe space is essential not only to the definition of home, but also to one’s mental wellbeing. Despite the common trope of an open community and its various forms, a safe space is not often freely given; it must be made and maintained. Though humans are social in nature, we should also feel comfortable holding space for ourselves. Sometimes that means giving more to hold your circle together, but sometimes it also means letting go for your own sake.
Everyone has a place to be, but where that place is and who you spend it with is uniquely yours. You can find your own home in your people, and in yourself too.

To me, communal spaces play an important role - to facilitate interactions and start conversations. To find support from a community of like-minded people, to check on or confide with friends about life’s constant ups and downs, or to spend time with your loved ones.

This battle is a silent one, and often, it is a solitary one. We fight back the demons in our head, trying to take back any sliver of control of our lives. It sometimes feels like we are fighting a losing battle, staring into the endless void, nothing staring back at us. Rejection, be it from lovers or from our careers, will always have a detrimental effect on us. If we are not strong enough, one might resort to unhealthy coping mechanisms to try to deal with the pain that is brought about by the rejection, such as isolating oneself from others.
However, we need to understand that there are others out there who are willing to lend a shoulder for us, to help us heal from our pain. We are not alone in this battle. There is hope. There are people willing to walk this path with you.

Sometimes I fall into a weird place in my own head. During these times, when I’m not in a great mental headspace, I tend to shut people out and spend time alone. I convince myself that I need to be alone. To manage my emotions. To rationalise my thoughts. To feel better. To endure life alone.
But we are not alone. We are not made to endure life alone. Relying on people is essential to life. It doesn’t make you weak or a burden, it makes you human. Humans are social creatures. Believe in science, countless research has shown that strong support systems boost our physical and emotional health. It is wired into our bodies; physically, we are better when we’re not alone. Humans cannot survive without social interaction.
This is a reminder to myself: we are not made to endure life alone.

Companionship comes in all shapes and sizes. Many of us did not realize the importance of it until the lock downs deprived us of this simple human connection.

When it hits us, we were not ready. It silenced the whole world , it took away the smiles from people's faces. It broke the societies that people had built for years in just days, it made places empty.
We were never meant to be alone and lonely before, but that time it forced the most of us to do so.
We never really felt the pain of others, but now we feel it.
But we are in this together. We just need a little hand to hold and and big heart for others.

We don't have to struggle with depression or mental illness to understand the sort of bone-aching loneliness that creeps up on us. It doesn't matter if we are with friends or alone under the sheets at 2am, darkness comes when it wants to. Sometimes friends are with us, but they seem so far away and unreachable.
Sometimes, it is easy to snap out of it and just reach out. But sometimes, all we can think of is how much we want to reach out, yet, the distance seems too great to cross. We dare not make that first step, and so we linger, enmeshed in that darkness. Maybe there isn't anything to be done except to wait it out until the darkness lifts. And it helps to have someone be with us in the dark.
We don't have to talk - knowing we have each other is enough. But will you enter this space with me?
